Granada Festival of Music and Dance 2026

The Granada Festival of Music and Dance 2026 invites audiences into a world where classical music, ballet, and the cultural spirit of Andalusia merge beneath the summer skies of southern Spain. Held from 11 June to 12 July 2026, the festival transforms Granada into one of Europe’s most atmospheric artistic destinations, where performances unfold in extraordinary venues including the Palace of Charles V within the Alhambra, historic courtyards, gardens, and open-air stages surrounded by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada.

Programme
Gustav Mahler: Symphony no. 9 in D major
Overview

Mahler's Last Symphony

Under the baton of its principal conductor, David Afkham, the Spanish National Orchestra (ONE) returns to the Palace of Charles V to perform one of the most profound works in the repertoire. Composed between 1909 and 1910, Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony occupies a unique place in his career and in the history of symphonic music. It is a work imbued with an awareness of loss and a retrospective gaze that does not shy away from formal innovation. In these final years, Mahler experienced a period of personal and creative crisis, marked by illness, the death of his daughter Maria Anna at the age of five, and his departure from his post as director of the Vienna State Opera. All of this translates into music of an introspective nature, in which irony, fragmentation, and the progressive dissolution of the discourse coexist with moments of profound lyricism. The Ninth seems to waver between vital affirmation and farewell, with a final movement that fades away in an almost suspended calm.

Palace of Charles V - Granada
Location   C. Real de la Alhambra, s/n, Centro

Located within the majestic Alhambra complex, the Palace of Charles V is one of the most extraordinary performance venues of the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance. Combining Renaissance grandeur with the mystical atmosphere of the Alhambra, the palace creates a breathtaking setting where music, dance, and history come together beneath the Andalusian night sky.

Built in the 16th century for Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the palace is renowned for its monumental circular courtyard — an architectural masterpiece unique in Spain. During the festival, this elegant open-air space transforms into a spectacular stage for opera, symphonic concerts, ballet, flamenco, and international dance performances.

The acoustics of the courtyard, framed by harmonious stone colonnades, create a remarkable natural resonance that enhances both orchestral richness and vocal clarity. As evening falls and the warm lights illuminate the Renaissance architecture, performances gain an atmosphere of rare beauty and emotional intensity.

Artists from around the world appear here each summer, making the Palace of Charles V one of the symbolic hearts of the Granada Festival. The combination of world-class performances and the historic surroundings of the Alhambra offers audiences a cultural experience unlike any traditional theatre or concert hall.

The setting itself adds dramatic power to every production. Surrounded by centuries of history, with views toward the gardens and ancient walls of the Alhambra, audiences experience music and dance within one of Europe’s most inspiring artistic landscapes.

Elegant, historic, and unforgettable, the Palace of Charles V transforms every festival performance into a magical encounter between art, architecture, and the spirit of Granada.
