Held from 11 June to 12 July 2026, the festival transforms Granada into one of Europe’s most atmospheric artistic destinations, where performances unfold in extraordinary venues including the Palace of Charles V within the Alhambra, historic courtyards, gardens, and open-air stages surrounded by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada.

Richard Wagner: Die Walküre: Magic Fire Music
Richard Wagner: Die Walküre: Wotan’s Farewell
Overview

The Magic Fire

The Budapest Festival Orchestra is one of Europe's most prestigious symphony orchestras. Founded in 1983 by Iván Fischer, its principal conductor and artistic director, it is distinguished by its technical excellence, stylistic flexibility, and an interpretive approach that combines historical rigor with expressive vitality. Under Fischer's leadership, the orchestra has developed its own unique sound and a strong international presence. It comes to Granada with a program rooted in the heart of German Romanticism. Schumann's Symphony No. 3 – the Rhenish Symphony – offers a luminous and humanist vision of the symphonic genre, linked to the landscape and spirit of the Rhine. As a dramatic counterpoint, the final scene of Wagner's Die Walküre condenses myth, emotion, and transcendence, with Wotan's farewell to Brünnhilde and the invocation of the magic fire, culminating in one of the most intense passages of 19th-century musical theater.

Venue Info

Palace of Charles V - Granada
Location   C. Real de la Alhambra, s/n, Centro

Located within the majestic Alhambra complex, the Palace of Charles V is one of the most extraordinary performance venues of the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance. Combining Renaissance grandeur with the mystical atmosphere of the Alhambra, the palace creates a breathtaking setting where music, dance, and history come together beneath the Andalusian night sky.

Built in the 16th century for Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the palace is renowned for its monumental circular courtyard — an architectural masterpiece unique in Spain. During the festival, this elegant open-air space transforms into a spectacular stage for opera, symphonic concerts, ballet, flamenco, and international dance performances.

The acoustics of the courtyard, framed by harmonious stone colonnades, create a remarkable natural resonance that enhances both orchestral richness and vocal clarity. As evening falls and the warm lights illuminate the Renaissance architecture, performances gain an atmosphere of rare beauty and emotional intensity.

Artists from around the world appear here each summer, making the Palace of Charles V one of the symbolic hearts of the Granada Festival. The combination of world-class performances and the historic surroundings of the Alhambra offers audiences a cultural experience unlike any traditional theatre or concert hall.

The setting itself adds dramatic power to every production. Surrounded by centuries of history, with views toward the gardens and ancient walls of the Alhambra, audiences experience music and dance within one of Europe’s most inspiring artistic landscapes.

Elegant, historic, and unforgettable, the Palace of Charles V transforms every festival performance into a magical encounter between art, architecture, and the spirit of Granada.
