Festival Castell de Peralada - Easter edition 2023

The mediaeval Castell de Peralada is the setting for the Castell de Peralada Festival during the months of July and August. Set in the Castle Park gardens, the Auditorium is the ideal venue for concerts on a summer night. The Church and the Cloister, by contrast, hosts recitals, chamber concerts and small-format operas. History and prestige identify the Festival which, both for its artistic events and for the exceptional nature of the setting in which it is staged, place this mediaeval town at the cultural and leisure heart of the summer nights of the Costa Brava.

Programme
Alessandro Scarlatti: La Giuditta
Overview

The Baroque ensemble Vespres d'Arnadí, headed by Dani Espasa, will perform Alessandro Scarlatti's La Giuditta for the first time in the festival's history.

Considered to be the founder of the Neapolitan School of Opera, Scarlatti composed a first oratorio called La Giuditta using a libretto by cardinal Pietro Ottoboni based on the biblical Book of Judith. The composer from Palermo maintained the title when he later recomposed the oratorio for three voices some years later, only this time he used a text by Antonio Ottoboni, cardinal Ottoboni's father. To distinguish the second Giuditta from the first, it is sometimes also referred to as La Giuditta de Cambridge, which is where the handwritten score is kept.
In Peralada, the multi-award-winning soprano from Barcelona, Serena Sáenz (winner of the 16th Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition and of the Festival Castell de Peralada Special Award and the undisputed star of the last Operalia, where she scooped several awards including Best Sarsuela Singer, the Birgit Nilsson award, and won second place in the competition's Best Female Voice category), will play Giuditta, the Hebrew heroine who freed the besieged city of Bethulia after seducing and decapitating general Holofernes. The countertenor Xavier Sabata, a recurring name in the Peralada Festival, will play Nutrice, who sings the iconic Dormi, o fulmine di guerra, one of the most beautiful, dramatic and moving lullabies of the history of music. Lastly, the British tenor Thomas Walker in the role of Oloferne completes this luxury vocal cast that the Castell de Peralada Festival has put together for the occasion and that will doubtless delight all lovers of the genre.
