Festival

Festival Castell de Peralada 2020

The mediaeval Castell de Peralada is the setting for the Castell de Peralada Festival during the months of July and August.

Programme
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A major, op. 92
George Frideric Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV 351
Overview

Almost since its beginnings, the festival has commissioned artists of acclaimed prestige to create its posters, adding their excellence and uniqueness to a festival that seeks to project itself as a springboard for creating trends far beyond the summer season of joy.

In 2011, to coincide with the festival’s 25th anniversary, Catalan artist resident in New York, Santi Moix created a pictorial piece entitled “Sea and Mountain”, which reflected the Mediterranean essence of the Alt Empordà. In 2016, Moix returned to the festival with an exhibition of black ceramics in the castle gardens, and this year, in collaboration with conductor Josep Pons, the artist will be painting a large-scale work to the sound of live music. This is a new shared initiative coinciding with a change in direction of opera, and more specifically of the Gran Teatre de Liceu, more associated than ever with the visual arts. In this setting, the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre de Liceu and plastic artist Santi Moix come together in a session of the Festival Castell de Peralada. Impressed by Hanabi (the Japanese fireworks festival), Moix says that "I’d never seen anything like it. The sky rained down fire and it was the inspiration for a new series of paintings". His work, which returns stubbornly to flowers, now observes the parallels between these botanical gifts and the result of these fire flowers. A metaphor for life: it explodes, is born and dies. This pictorial transcription of the Hanabi festivals is the basis for filling a painting with explosions of colour where Moix will use the al fresco painting he created at the Romanesque church of Saurí, in the Pallars region. A concert where the fireworks will be replaced by the outburst of live painting and the soundtrack by Handel will be the perfect stimulus to bring this painting apotheosis into play.
