Semyon Semyonovich Bychkov is an outstanding Russian-American conductor, born on November 30, 1952 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). He is known for his deep musical understanding, mastery and emotional expressiveness on the catwalk

 

Bychkov began his musical career at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied under the famous conductor Ilya Musin. His talent was quickly noticed, and as a student he began conducting the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra. In 1975, he emigrated to the United States, where he continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music.

After moving to the United States, Semyon Bychkov quickly gained recognition and began working with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In Europe, he became chief conductor of the Paris Orchestra in 1985, a position he held until 1989. In 1997, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London, where he remained until 2003.

From 2003 to 2010, Bychkov was Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Semphonietta Orchestra of the Vienna Radio (ORF Radio-Vienna Symphony Orchestra).. In 2015, he became Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he still holds today. His work with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra is characterized by high standards of performance and a deep immersion in musical material.

Bychkov is known for his wide repertoire, which covers both classical and contemporary music. He is particularly known for his interpretations of works by Shostakovich, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff. He has made numerous recordings with various orchestras, many of which have received high critical acclaim and awards, including a Grammy Award.
