Programme

Overview

Explore the powerful new oratorio Pierrepoint: In the Balance as it confronts the tense hours before Ruth Ellis’s execution, then let Fauré’s serene Requiem bring solace and transcendence. Join historian David Olusoga and a distinguished panel to unpack the historical and ethical dimensions before the music begins.Begin the evening with an intimate panel chaired by historian David Olusoga, joined by Laura Enston—Ruth Ellis’s granddaughter and advocate—CEO of Amnesty International Kerry Moscogiuri, composer Paul Honey and librettist Gregory Warren Wilson. This pre-concert discussion uncovers the life and tragic fate of the last woman executed in Britain, probing the moral, historical and ethical questions that resonate today. At 7.30 pm, the auditorium falls into silence for the world premiere of Honey’s oratorio Pierrepoint: In the Balance. Set on the claustrophobic night of 1955, with Wilson’s stark libretto guiding every phrase, the music inhabits a narrow cell and the psyche of executioner Albert Pierrepoint as he readies himself for his most harrowing task. As the final chord fades, Gabriel Fauré’s luminous Requiem emerges—its gentle harmonies and serene pacing offering a consoling, prayer-like release from judgment and a moment of transcendence.
