From 26 May to 12 June 2027, Bergen hosts the 75th Bergen International Festival, marking a major anniversary for one of Scandinavia’s leading celebrations of music and the performing arts. Since its foundation in 1953, the festival has brought together internationally acclaimed artists and emerging talents, presenting an ambitious programme of classical music, opera, theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performances across the historic Norwegian city.
A central figure of the anniversary edition is Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, returning as Artist in Residence for the second time, exactly 30 years after first holding the title in 1997. His appearances span several distinctive projects, including the Jubilee Concert with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra on 26 and 27 May. The opening programme revisits the festival’s inaugural year, reimagining its musical heritage for a contemporary audience.
Andsnes also joins the Chiaroscuro Quartet on 29 and 30 May for chamber music by Schumann and Boccherini, with the pianist performing on a fortepiano. Another highlight comes on 3 and 4 June, when he performs Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, an internationally renowned period-instrument ensemble. The programme offers a fresh perspective on this Norwegian masterpiece through historically informed performance and the use of an 1881 Steinway piano.
The residency also includes a piano marathon devoted to Erik Satie’s Vexations on 28 May, bringing together Andsnes, local pianists and music students in a collective performance of the composer’s experimental work.
The festival unfolds across Bergen’s concert halls, churches, historic buildings and intimate cultural spaces. Among its principal venues are Grieghallen, Håkonshallen, the University Aula and Troldhaugen, the former home of Edvard Grieg. This close connection with the city’s musical and architectural heritage gives the event a distinctive character.
The 2027 programme is being announced in stages, with further performances and participating artists still to be revealed. The anniversary edition promises a particularly rich encounter between Norwegian musical traditions, international artistry and contemporary creative expression.
