From 30 May to 7 June 2026, the Bath International Music Festival returned as a standalone event, bringing nine days of classical music to one of England’s most beautiful historic cities. The festival presented an impressive line-up of internationally acclaimed performers, with a programme spanning orchestral and chamber music, solo piano recitals, Renaissance vocal repertoire and jazz.

Among the season’s leading artists were three distinguished pianists: Richard Goode, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Steven Osborne. Goode opened the festival with a recital devoted to Beethoven’s late piano sonatas, including the monumental Op. 109, Op. 110 and Op. 111. Bavouzet performed the complete piano works of Maurice Ravel, while Osborne explored Schubert’s final sonatas, offering a journey through some of the most profound works in the Romantic piano repertoire.

Orchestral music featured prominently with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, performing a programme centred on concertos and orchestral works by Johann Sebastian Bach. Led by violinist Maria Włoszczowska, the ensemble presented a selection that included Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major and Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, alongside music by Handel.

Vocal music highlights included The Gesualdo Six, whose immersive production Secret Byrd explored the music and religious world of Renaissance composer William Byrd. Performed in Bath Abbey in collaboration with viol consort Fretwork, the production combined music, theatrical storytelling and an atmospheric staging. The programme also welcomed vocal ensemble I Fagiolini, presenting Renaissance masterpieces from England and Spain at St Mary’s Church, Bathwick.

The festival extended beyond traditional classical repertoire. Clarinetist and composer Mark Simpson appeared in recital, while the specially assembled Bath Festival Tango Ensemble explored the music of Astor Piazzolla. Jazz returned to the historic Pump Room with pianist James Pearson and his trio, tracing the evolution of jazz piano through works associated with Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Dave Brubeck and Oscar Peterson.

Concerts took place in distinctive venues throughout Bath, including Bath Abbey, St Mary’s Church, St Swithin’s Church, the Pump Room and Komedia. The combination of exceptional musicianship, varied programming and the city's remarkable architectural heritage made the Bath International Music Festival 2026 a memorable celebration of music in an intimate and historic setting.

About the Bath International Music Festival

Founded in 1948, the Bath International Music Festival is one of the longest-running music festivals in the United Kingdom. Held in the historic city of Bath, Somerset, it brings together internationally acclaimed musicians, distinguished ensembles and emerging talents for a summer celebration of classical music and other musical traditions.

The festival has a rich history of welcoming celebrated performers and artistic leaders. Over the decades, its musical direction has been shaped by distinguished figures including Yehudi Menuhin and Joanna MacGregor, helping establish Bath as an important destination on the British classical music calendar.

Classical music forms the heart of the programme, with orchestral performances, chamber concerts, solo recitals, choral music and early-music projects. The festival also embraces jazz, folk and world music, creating opportunities for unexpected collaborations and encounters between different musical styles. Alongside established international artists, it regularly showcases promising young performers and supports new musical projects.

Concerts take place in some of Bath’s most characterful venues, including Bath Abbey, The Forum, historic churches and intimate performance spaces throughout the city. The setting is an important part of the festival's appeal: Bath’s Georgian architecture, historic landmarks and distinctive cultural atmosphere provide an elegant backdrop for performances.

The festival has undergone several changes throughout its history. After being incorporated into the broader multi-arts Bath Festival from 2017 to 2025, the Bath International Music Festival returned as a standalone event in 2026, alongside the Bath Literature Festival. This renewed focus gives music its own dedicated place in the city's annual cultural programme.

Combining a distinguished musical heritage with an open-minded approach to programming, the Bath International Music Festival offers a varied concert experience in one of England’s most beautiful historic cities.
