Overview

Based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky.
First of all, the possibility of happiness flashes: Natascha loves Aljoscha, Aljoscha loves Natascha. They want to get married, the fathers are against it. Aljoscha's father, Prince Walkowski, wants to marry off his son to the wealthy heiress Katja in order to get their millions. Katja wants to do good with her money, but the prince has experience with ripping young women. Like the mother of the girl Nelly, whose sheltered childhood was destroyed before she was even born. And that continues to be destroyed.

“Splittermen” is what director Sascha Hawemann calls these inhabitants of the cosmos unfolded in "Humiliated and Insulted", “adapted and torn together, in and for themselves, the eternal, God-willed, irreversible exploitation. Remain human last mission of the missed revolution. "
Greed and contempt for human beings as central diseases of a society without utopias. Right in the middle of it all is Vanya, an author who survives while he writes down what happens: How the power man Prince Walkowski makes the puppets dance. How your own body falls to the ground again and again, in seemingly endless jerks of being unable to bear it.
Because Dostoyevsky's own story shimmers through again and again in "Humiliated and Insulted". That of a writer who is finally allowed to return to St. Petersburg after eight years in Siberian exile.
Dostoyevsky's third novel was published in 1861, initially in installments, in the magazine Vremya, which he and his brother founded - the author was driven by financial difficulties and the knowledge that he had to publish the first chapters of a story without knowing the end. A story like a feverish dream, written by a writer who writes himself back to life with it. A story full of the pressure of being, the pressure of love, the pressure of having, that looks from yesterday through today to tomorrow, in which atrocities committed by people against people are repeated over generations - in a city that eats everything.

Venue Info

Volkstheater - Vienna
Location   Arthur-Schnitzler-Platz 1

The Volkstheater in Vienna (roughly translated as "People's Theatre") was founded in 1889 by request of the citizens of Vienna, amongst them the dramatist Ludwig Anzengruber and the furniture manufacturer Thonet, in order to offer a popular counterweight to the Hofburgtheater.

It was erected according to designs by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who attempted to reconcile their plans with historicism. It is located in Neubau, the seventh district of Vienna.

The founders of this stage had a theatrical stage in mind, in order to expose wider circles of the population of Vienna to classical and modern literature whilst staging these next to more traditional plays. The theatre follows this tradition even today. New productions of the classics are always in the pipeline along with regular reinterpretations of works by Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy and many new plays and reruns. Special attention is given to Austrian playwrights of old and new.

In 2005 Michael Schottenberg became art director of the Volkstheater.

In 2005 the Volkstheater started an alternative theater stage called "Volkstheater Hundsturm" in Margareten, the fifth district of Vienna. It is a place for experimental theater (e.g. Wojtek Klemm, Dejan Dukovski, monochrom).
