Overview

Henry Mason's production became an audience hit for the whole family at the Volksoper.

A whirlwind sweeps Dorothy and her dog Toto into the magical land of Oz. To get back home, Dorothy must find the Wizard of Oz. Together with a scarecrow, a tin man and a lion, she sets out on her journey. But perhaps in the end help is waiting where you don't expect it and the way home can only be found within yourself.

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is probably America's most famous fairy tale, which gained worldwide cult status through the film version with the young Judy Garland (1939). The most famous song from it, Over the Rainbow by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, won an Oscar in 1940.

History
Premiere of this production: 16 June 1902, Grand Opera House, Chicago

The Wizard of Oz was a 1902 musical extravaganza based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The main plot of the show, as recounted in newspapers of the time, is Pastoria's attempts to regain the throne from the Wizard of Oz. The original protagonists' search for the Wizard puts them on the wrong side of the law.

Synopsis

Act I

Dorothy is beset by difficulties: cruel Miss Gulch has it in for her because Dorothy’s little dog Toto sometimes chases her cat. But Dorothy’s Aunt Em and Uncle Henry have no time for her – there is too much to do on the farm. The farm workers Zeke, Hunk and Hickory give Dorothy plenty of good advice – but when Miss Gulch appears with a warrant from the sheriff to take Dorothy’s dog away, none of the adults is able to stand up to her.Dorothy resolves to run away from her home in Kansas together with Toto. She meets a person who calls himself the fortune teller Professor Marvel, who invents a story that Dorothy’s aunt is fatally ill. Dorothy immediately runs home. Just then a tornado appears. While the others take shelter in a cellar Dorothy arrives too late and runs into the farmhouse, which is whisked up by the storm. Dorothy is carried away – to the mystical Land of Oz.
Dorothy and the farmhouse are blown all the way to Munchkin City, squashing the Wicked Witch of the East upon landing and thereby releasing the tiny Munchkins from the witch’s spell of fear. Dorothy is celebrated as a heroine. But then the sister of the dead witch appears, the Wicked Witch of the West. She wants her sister’s ruby shoes, which confer power upon whoever wears them. Suddenly, however, the ruby shoes are on Dorothy’s feet. The Good Witch Glinda tells Dorothy to go to the Emerald City to consult the Wizard of Oz, who can tell her how to get back to Kansas. Dorothy sets off with Toto along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City.

On the way she makes friends with a scarecrow, who desperately wants to acquire a brain, a tin man who wants to get a heart, and a cowardly lion who dreams of being courageous. The three of them accompany Dorothy on her way to the Wizard; if he can show Dorothy the way back to Kansas, he can surely fulfil their wishes also. But the Wicked Witch of the West is not willing to accept defeat: she conjures up a field of poisonous poppies which make the friends fall into a deep sleep on the spot. Glinda comes to their aid and causes snow to fall on the poppies, which breaks the witch’s evil spell. Now at last the friends can see their goal ahead of them: the Emerald City.

Act II

When he sees that she is wearing the ruby shoes, the watchman at the Emerald City allows Dorothy and her friends to enter. Finally they are admitted to the presence of the Wizard of Oz. He promises to grant the friends their wishes if they will first prove themselves worthy by bringing him the broomstick of the wicked witch.

The Witch of the West mobilises all the forces under her command – the enslaved people of the Winkies and the flying monkeys – and sets biting insects, the jitterbugs, after Dorothy and her friends. Anyone who is bitten by a jitterbug has to dance until they are exhausted. The monkeys drag Dorothy and Toto off to the witch’s castle. Toto succeeds in escaping. When the witch fails to wrench the ruby shoes from Dorothy’s feet, she threatens to kill her.

The scarecrow, the tin man and the cowardly lion get a hold of Winkie uniforms and are thus able to enter the castle. With Toto’s help they find Dorothy. When the witch threatens the scarecrow with fire, Dorothy pours water over her – whereupon the witch melts away and dies.

When the friends present themselves to the Wizard again, they find that he is just an ordinary person and his magic is just a fraud. But through him the four discover that everything they so dearly wished for is already in their possession. As an external symbol of this, the scarecrow is given a diploma, the lion is given a medal for bravery, and the tin man is given a prize for the extraordinary love and care he gave to his friends. And Dorothy learns that she is able at any time, under her own powers, to return to Kansas.

Act One: The Storm
A young girl named Dorothy Gale lives on the great Kansas prairie with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and cow, Imogene. One day, while she is playing with her pet cow, Imogene, a fierce whirlwind appears. Dorothy and Imogene take shelter in the farmhouse, which is carried far away into the clouds.

Meanwhile, in the hamlet of Center Munch, the little Munchkins dance around their maypole, not noticing that Dorothy's house has fallen to Earth and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy opens the front door and marvels at the strange Land of Oz. The Good Witch of the North awards her with a magic ring that grants her three wishes and can summon Glinda the Good Witch of the South at any time. The Good Witch then waves her wand and a pair of beautiful shoes appear on Dorothy's feet. She tells Dorothy that if she wants to get home, she must ask the Wizard of Oz to help her.

After a while everyone exits, and Dorothy is left alone with a Scarecrow hung on a pole. She wishes she had someone to talk to, and he comes to life. He gets down from the pole and complains that he has no brain. Dorothy suggests that he join her on the road to the Emerald City, and he sings "Alas for the Man Without Brains." They come upon the Tin Woodman, who has rusted playing his piccolo. As it turns out, his real name is Niccolo Chopper. He explains that the Wicked Witch of the West took his heart, so he cannot love his girlfriend, Cynthia. He joins them in the hope of receiving a heart from the Wizard, so that he can return to Cynthia.

Act Two: The Emerald City
The Keeper of the Gates patrols outside the Emerald City. Sir Wiley Gyle enters, a mad old inventor who has scorned magic since his mother died. He is sent to prison for murdering his wife. The travelers enter the Emerald City.

The Wizard gives the Scarecrow a brain and the Tin Woodman a heart. He declares this the greatest of all his achievements and calls for a celebration. The Ball of All Nations is thrown, in which up to twelve songs are sung by various characters. The Wizard performs a basket trick in which King Pastoria is the mark. In the middle of it Pastoria claims his right to the throne and overthrows the Wizard. A great commotion breaks out, with the Wizard escaping in a hot air balloon. Dorothy, still longing to get home, sets off with her companions to the castle of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South.

Act Three: Glinda's Palace
Dorothy and her friends arrive at Glinda's palace and are welcomed. There are great celebrations, with Glinda promising to send Dorothy home. The whole cast rushes out from the wings and sings the finale.

Volksoper Vienna - Vienna
Location   Währinger Strasse 78

The Vienna Volksoper is a major opera house in Vienna, Austria. It produces three hundred performances of twenty-five German language productions during an annual season which runs from September through June.

Volksoper Vienna was built in 1898 as the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater (Kaiser's Jubilee Civic Theatre), originally producing only plays. Because of the very brief construction period (10 months) the first director Adam Müller-Gutenbrunn had to start with debts of 160,000 gulden. After this inauspicious startup the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater had to declare bankruptcy five years later in 1903.

On 1 September 1903 Rainer Simons took over the house and renamed it the Kaiserjubiläum-Stadttheater - Volksoper (public opera). His intention was to continue the production of plays but also establish series of opera and operetta. The first Viennese performances of Tosca and Salome were given at the Volksoper in 1907 and 1910 respectively. World-famous singers such as Maria Jeritza, Leo Slezak and Richard Tauber appeared there; the conductor Alexander Zemlinsky became the first bandmaster in 1906.

In the years up to and through the First World War the Volksoper attained a position as Vienna's second prestige opera house. In 1919, Felix Weingartner became Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. He was followed as Director by Hugo Gruder-Guntram. After 1929, it focused on light opera, and under Gruder-Guntram undertook a number of summer tours to Abbazia in 1935, Cairo and Alexandria in 1937 and throughout Italy in 1938, with guest appearances from Richard Tauber. After the Second World War, the Vienna Volksoper became the alternative venue to the devastated Vienna State Opera. In 1955 the Volksoper returned to its former role of presenting opera, operetta, and musicals.

From September 1991 to June 1996 the Vienna Volksoper was under a collective leadership with the Vienna State Opera. In 1999 the Volksoper became a 100% subsidiary of the Bundestheater-Holding. Since 1 September 2007 Robert Meyer has headed the Volksoper as artistic director together with the business manager Christoph Ladstätter. Each season includes about 25 productions, a total of approximately 300 performances—a performance almost every day. In addition to opera, operetta, musicals and ballet, there are special performances and children's programs.
