Overview

A Chinese musical combining the aesthetics of traditional Chinese culture with contemporary musical theatre. Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story follows the mysterious Embroidered Uniform Guard Feng Wuyang as a mysterious necklace draws him into a conspiracy involving the imperial family, the Eastern Depot and rival political factions.

The story is set during the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty. The political wounds left by the earlier Jingnan Campaign have not yet healed, while the Han Prince is preparing to challenge the emperor and repeat the power struggle of the previous generation.

At the centre of the story is Feng Wuyang, an unconventional Embroidered Uniform Guard who makes a living catching and selling crickets. When a mysterious necklace known as the “Tears of the Four Seas” appears, Feng becomes unexpectedly entangled in a dangerous political conspiracy. The necklace is said to have been brought back by Zheng He from his overseas voyages and connected with the missing Jianwen Emperor.

Feng becomes a wanted man and is drawn into a conflict involving the imperial court, the Eastern Depot, the Han Prince and secret forces. His relationship with the Eastern Depot commander Mei Shuanghua is both adversarial and cooperative. As the mystery surrounding the necklace unfolds, Feng also discovers that his own origins are connected to the historical conflict.

The production combines historical intrigue, martial-arts aesthetics, romance, comedy and traditional Chinese visual elements with contemporary musical theatre.
