Overview

The dance drama describes the love story between the slave Spartacus and the female slave Phrygia in the 1st century BC. In order to regain freedom, Spartacus and the gladiators who couldn't bear to fight each other set up an uprising. The Roman Empire set a trap, and Spartacus was captured in battle and eventually died at the warrior's spear. Desperate Phrygia came to the wilderness where Spartacus died in battle, remembering her lover...

"Spartacus" is an "epic-level symphonic ballet" created by Russian ballet master Mr. Yuri Grigorovich. It is an immortal masterpiece of neoclassical ballet in the 20th century. Few dance companies in the world have the ability to try it Challenge interpretation. Liaoning Ballet, as the troupe with the exclusive copyright of this dance drama in China, has filled the gap in the domestic ballet circle.

This work is known for its epic style and refined dance language. Due to the difficulty of rehearsing the dance drama, it requires high jumping and explosive power of the male dancers. There is no ballet troupe in the world capable of performing "Spartacus". There are very few, except for occasional Russian traditional ballet troupes such as Mariinsky Theater, Bolshoi Theater and St. Petersburg Theater, famous ballet troupes from European countries such as Britain and France basically avoid performing.

Liaoning Ballet, as the troupe with the exclusive copyright of this ballet in China, successfully introduced this work, setting a precedent in China and filling the gap in the domestic ballet circle. The lineup of this performance is led by the principal of Liaoning Ballet Troupe and gathered together by rookies, presenting the original world classics.

On the stage presentation, the male actors of the Liaoning Ballet are all over 1.80 meters tall, with rich and varied roles and a uniform team, which fully reflects the solemnity and shocking beauty of the heroic image; at the same time, the actresses also have a lot of passionate dance passages No less, the character portrayal is in-depth and delicate. The whole dance drama combines large-scale group dances, duets and solo dances in a symphonic way, with epic and soul-stirring power.

Fifty years ago, the Bolshoi Theater hosted the premiere of the ballet Aram Khachaturian by the Soviet composer Spartak staged by Yuri Grigorovich. By that time, Igor Moiseev and Leonid Yakobson had already presented their stage incarnations of this score. However, it was “Spartak” of Grigorovich that became the hallmark of the theater and the Soviet ballet as a whole.

History
Premiere of this production: 27 December 1956, Kirov Theatre, Leningrad

Spartacus is a ballet by Aram Khachaturian (1903–1978). The work follows the exploits of Spartacus, the leader of the slave uprising against the Romans known as the Third Servile War, although the ballet's storyline takes considerable liberties with the historical record.

Synopsis

Act I
The Roman consul Crassus returns to Rome from his latest conquests in a triumphal procession. Among his captives are the Thracian king Spartacus and his wife Phrygia. Spartacus laments his captivity and bids a bitter farewell to Phrygia, who is taken off to join Crassus’ harem of concubines. To entertain Crassus and his entourage, Spartacus is sent into the gladiatorial ring and is forced to kill a close friend. Horrified at his deed, Spartacus incites his fellow captives to rebellion.
