Overview

Music and Song is an original Chinese dance drama inspired by the traditional concept of “rites ordering the universe and music harmonizing heaven and earth.” Set against the fictional ancient kingdoms of He and Yue, the production tells a story of conflict, reconciliation and the pursuit of peace, incorporating Chu culture, ancient bronze-bell music, Chu dance and Nuo ritual traditions.

Music and Song is an original large-scale Chinese dance drama created with Chu culture as its artistic foundation. The story takes place in the legendary kingdoms of He and Yue and follows the two states as they move from confrontation and warfare toward reconciliation and peace.

After the accession of the new ruler He Cheng, the kingdoms become caught in a series of political conflicts and personal struggles. The plot includes an assassination attempt against the Queen Mother, a general’s seizure of power and the redemption of a maid. Against this dramatic background, the characters face choices between war and peace, personal ambition and responsibility.

The production draws heavily on the musical and ritual heritage of ancient Chu. Ancient bronze-bell music, Chu-style dance, Nuo ritual performance and other elements of traditional Chinese culture are combined with contemporary stage choreography and visual design. The 2026 version has undergone a comprehensive upgrade of its dramatic pacing, stage design and multimedia visuals.
