Overview

The Last Bullet is an original Chinese musical based on the true story of Chen Huaimin, a 22-year-old Chinese air force pilot who fought during the 1938 Battle of Wuhan. Combining wartime drama, romance and musical theatre, the production portrays his final mission and his decision to sacrifice his life by ramming his aircraft into an enemy plane.

Set during the 1938 Battle of Wuhan, The Last Bullet tells the story of Chen Huaimin, one of the young Chinese pilots who defended Wuhan during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

The musical follows Chen from his life as a young pilot through his relationships with his family, fellow servicemen and his fiancée Wang Lulu. As the air battles intensify, his personal hopes and romantic relationship are placed against the wider reality of war.

When his aircraft is hit and catches fire during combat, Chen chooses not to parachute to safety. Instead, he turns his damaged aircraft toward the enemy and uses his own life as the “last bullet”. His sacrifice becomes the central dramatic moment of the production.

The production combines musical storytelling with choreography and multimedia stage design. It was created by Wuhan Song and Dance Theatre together with the Hubei Provincial Cultural Activities Planning Center and was supported as a 2025 National Arts Fund major stage-production project.
