Savonlinna Opera Festival 2023

An opera festival in the Finnish summer is an opportunity to enjoy not only high-quality opera performances but also wonderfully light July nights and Nordic nature. The small town of Savonlinna is full of life in July. The medieval Olavinlinna castle on the shore of the famous Lake Saimaa plays host to the festival, which can be reached from Helsinki by train and plane. Visiting artists at Savonlinna Opera Festival in summer 2023 include Lisette Oropesa, Frédéric Antoun, and conductor Sakari Oramo. In 2023 the Savonlinna Opera Festival will take place from 1 to 30 July 2023.

Programme
Overview

Soprano Lisette Oropesa has her own special, uniquely magical charm. There is no question that she’s one of today’s most sought-after, acclaimed and revered singers of the global opera scene. Her pitch-perfect technique is complemented by a crystalline, colourful and powerful voice. What’s more, she has a sharp sense of lyrics and impressive drama skills. When not singing, she loves books by the Brontë sisters and runs marathons.

“There must be a strength and a vulnerability. In this career, you cannot have only one.” Lisette Oropesa, Opera Charm Magazine

The Cuban-American singer started from the very top at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. She visited the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2019 with Milan’s La Scala. At this year’s festival, she will also sing the lead role of Romeo and Juliet.

“Now, what is a diva? I have never called myself one nor do I concern myself with trying to be one. For me, a diva is a person who gives their life to this craft and gains the respect and admiration of those around them. But they don’t do it by trying. They do it by simply doing.” Lisette Oropesa, Opera Charm Magazine

Venue Info

Olavinlinna - Savonlinna
Location   Olavinkatu 27

Rising dramatically from the waters of Lake Saimaa, Olavinlinna Castle is one of the most extraordinary opera venues in the world. This 15th-century medieval fortress, with its massive stone walls and towers, becomes each summer a unique stage for the renowned Savonlinna Opera Festival, where history and music merge in unforgettable harmony.

Built in 1475, the castle preserves its authentic atmosphere of a northern stronghold, creating a setting unlike any traditional opera house. Performances take place in the central courtyard, transformed into an open-air auditorium where ancient stone surfaces enhance natural acoustics, giving voices remarkable clarity and depth.

The dramatic surroundings add a powerful visual dimension to every production. As twilight descends over the lake and the northern sky glows softly, the illuminated walls of Olavinlinna create a magical backdrop for opera’s most emotional and grand works. The combination of nature, architecture, and live performance turns each evening into a truly immersive experience.

The Savonlinna Opera Festival is celebrated for its high artistic standards, international casts, and imaginative productions, all of which gain a unique intensity within the castle’s historic space. Here, opera feels both monumental and intimate — a rare balance that leaves a lasting impression.

At Olavinlinna, opera is not just performed — it is lived, surrounded by history, water, and the timeless beauty of the Finnish landscape.
