Overview

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we honor two composers who helped shape one of America’s signature musical institutions.

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s work on Broadway broke ground and forged pathways, from their collaboration on West Side Story, to Bernstein’s On the Town and Candide, to Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music. Join us as the Boston Pops and some of musical theater’s freshest talent pay tribute to two titans of the Great White Way.

Koussevitzky Music Shed - Lenox
Location   297 West Street

Set amid the picturesque landscapes of the Berkshires, the Koussevitzky Music Shed is one of America’s most iconic open-air concert venues and the artistic heart of the Tanglewood Music Festival. Since its opening in 1938, the venue has served as the summer home of the legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra, welcoming generations of music lovers to unforgettable performances beneath the summer sky.

Named in honor of conductor Serge Koussevitzky, whose vision helped establish Tanglewood as a major cultural center, the Music Shed combines architectural simplicity with exceptional acoustics. Its open structure creates a unique connection between music and nature, allowing audiences to experience symphonic masterpieces surrounded by trees, rolling hills, and fresh evening air.

Inside the pavilion, listeners enjoy remarkable sound quality and clear sightlines, while outside, thousands gather on the expansive lawns for the beloved Tanglewood tradition of picnic concerts. As the orchestra performs and the sun sets over the Berkshires, the atmosphere becomes both relaxed and deeply inspiring.

Over the decades, the Koussevitzky Music Shed has hosted many of the world’s greatest conductors, soloists, composers, and ensembles, presenting everything from classical repertoire and film music to jazz and contemporary works. Its stage has become synonymous with artistic excellence and the timeless joy of live performance.

Elegant, atmospheric, and deeply connected to musical tradition, the Koussevitzky Music Shed offers one of the most magical concert experiences in the world of classical music.
