Overview

The epic Chinese dance drama “Tiangong Kaiwu” , directed by the acclaimed film director Lu Chuan, is a masterpiece presented by the Jiangxi Performing Arts Group (Jiangxi Wenyituan / 江西文演集团) in collaboration with the Beijing Dance Academy

Set during the fading years of the Ming Dynasty, the story follows the extraordinary life of Song Yingxing, a brilliant intellectual who repeatedly fails the rigid imperial civil service examinations. Disillusioned by an academic system that prioritizes abstract classical texts over practical knowledge, he chooses a revolutionary path. He turns his back on wealth and high-ranking court positions to embark on a lifelong journey across China, dedicated to recording the actual mechanics of human labor and survival. The narrative tracks his extensive travels from northern drylands to southern rice paddies. On his journey, Song embeds himself among ordinary working-class citizens—blacksmiths, weavers, farmers, and pottery makers. Through powerful, cinematic choreography directed by Lu Chuan, the physical acts of labor are transformed on stage into high-art movements. The dancers' bodies vividly mimic the heavy, rhythmic pounding of hot iron, the smooth spinning of silk wheels, the molding of wet clay, and the exhausting harvest of rice crops under the blazing sun. As the Ming Dynasty collapses into war and chaos, Song Yingxing fights against time, poverty, and political unrest to compile his massive findings. He ultimately creates "Tiangong Kaiwu", a monumental, world-changing scientific encyclopedia. The dance drama serves as a soaring tribute to human resilience, showing how a single man’s curiosity immortalized the everyday wisdom, craftsmanship, and working spirit of the Chinese people.
