Overview

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Tang Dynasty, this grand epic follows the life, unyielding integrity, and artistic soul of Yan Zhenqing, one of the most revered statesmen and calligraphy masters in Chinese history. The narrative reaches its emotional climax during the devastating An-Shi Rebellion, a brutal civil war that fractures the empire and directly threatens the Yan family. Faced with immense pressure to surrender, Yan Zhenqing refuses to break. His family pays the ultimate price when his beloved nephew, Yan Jiming, is captured and brutally executed by rebel forces for refusing to betray the state. Driven by overwhelming grief, righteous fury, and a profound sense of patriotism, Yan Zhenqing sits down to compose a eulogy for his fallen nephew. This moment of pure raw emotion gives birth to the “Draft of a Requiem to My Nephew” (Ji Zhi Wen Gao). Through breathtaking contemporary dance and striking historical stage production, the performance physicalizes his brushwork on stage. The dancers' movements reflect the very texture of ink on paper—shifting seamlessly from soft, mourning brushstrokes to chaotic, heavy, and jagged lines that mirror a broken heart. It is not just a story of a historical tragedy, but a timeless testament to a man who transformed his deepest agony into an eternal masterpiece of Chinese spirit and culture.
