Overview

Plum Blossom Award winners Qi Aiyun and Zhang Tao lead an evening of Qinqiang opera excerpts – wronged ghosts, vengeance and fire-breathing stagecraft from the great opera of Shaanxi.

Three winners of the Plum Blossom Award, China’s highest theatre award, share the stage: Qi Aiyun, one of Qinqiang’s “four great female leads”, who performs the fire-breathing ghost scenes of A Visit to West Lake, the genre’s best-known excerpt; Zhang Tao, a master of young-scholar roles; and Li Min, the first opera performer from Xinjiang ever to win the award. They are joined by the Shaanxi Grand Drama Qinqiang Opera Troupe.

In A Visit to West Lake, the ghost of the murdered Li Huiniang, armed with a magic fan, saves the scholar Pei Ruiqing from the assassin sent by Jia Sidao. In The Burning of Incense, the betrayed Jiao Guiying beats the idols of the Sea God’s temple and takes her own life – then returns as a ghost to test her faithless husband Wang Kui and drag him to judgment.
