Overview

Anqing Huangmei Opera Theatre presents The Female Prince Consort – Huangmei opera’s much-loved classic of a young woman who wins the top imperial exam rank in disguise and finds herself married to the princess.

The Anqing company describes itself as the home troupe of Yan Fengying, remembered as the “queen of Huangmei opera”, who sang this very role in the 1959 film. Feng Suzhen is played by Wang Qin, winner of the Plum Blossom Award – China’s highest theatre award – and a national inheritor of Huangmei opera; the princess is played by Xia Yuanyuan.

To save her wrongly imprisoned sweetheart, Feng Suzhen dresses as a man, sits the imperial examination under another name and takes the top rank – only to be chosen as the princess’s husband. Her wedding-night confession wins the princess over, the emperor pardons her beloved, and the story ends with not one wedding but two.
