Overview

Anqing Huangmei Opera Theatre presents Marriage of the Fairy Princess – Huangmei opera’s signature love story, in which a fairy gives up heaven for a kind-hearted mortal.

The Seventh Fairy is the role Yan Fengying, the “queen of Huangmei opera”, made famous in the 1956 film, and the Anqing company, which describes itself as her home troupe, performs the story in its own Anqing style. The fairy is sung by Zheng Yulan; Dong Yong is Yu Wenbing, winner of China’s Wenhua Performance Award.

Tired of heaven, the Seventh Fairy falls for the hard-working, devoted Dong Yong and marries him beneath a pagoda tree. When his master demands ten bolts of silk in a single night, her fairy sisters weave them by dawn – but then the Jade Emperor orders her home, threatening Dong Yong’s life, and she must say a heartbreaking farewell, vowing that their hearts will stay together.
