Overview

The Brothers Karamazov comes to the stage as a Chinese-language musical – Dostoevsky’s great novel of a father’s murder, three very different brothers and a family torn apart.

Adapted from a Korean original, the Chinese version is produced by Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai West Bund Grand Theatre and premiered in Shanghai in October 2022.

Fyodor Karamazov is a notorious drunkard and libertine, and his three sons – hot-blooded Dmitri, coolly rational Ivan and gentle Alyosha – share a growing hatred of him; the servant Smerdyakov is rumoured to be his illegitimate son. One quiet night Fyodor is found dead at home, covered in blood. Dmitri, who had threatened him in a quarrel over the woman they both loved, is arrested – but as the court prepares its verdict, the truth is far from clear.

The cast of the run includes Fu Xiang, Wang Hanyu, Teng Chunpeng, Li Weipeng, Xu Zehui, Jiang Lai, Guo Jiaxuan and Xu Hang; Li Weipeng has played Ivan since the Chinese version opened in 2022.

Beijing Performing Arts Centre, nicknamed the Cultural Granary and one of the three major buildings of Beijing's city sub-centre, opened on 27 December 2023 beside the Urban Green Heart Forest Park. Its Drama Theatre seats 1,000 and has a proscenium stage of about 1,800 square metres and a 122-speaker sound system with concealed main loudspeakers.
